Rent or buy an e-bike? The honest cost comparison
We rent and sell e-bikes, so we have no reason to push you either way. Short stay or uncertain plans? Renting usually wins. Riding for many months? Buying usually wins. Put in your own numbers below and see where the line falls for you.
Calculator
What will it really cost you?
Rent uses our Food delivery e-bike plans for one contract of that length (3+ weeks $70, 4+ $65, 8+ $59.99, 12+ $49.99, 18+ $42.80 a week) and the 2 free weeks after your first 12. The refundable deposit is not a cost and is left out. Owner figures are your own assumptions, not quotes.
Side by side
Renting vs owning, beyond the price
| Rent from us | Buy your own | |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | First week + refundable deposit ($75; $500 on a Working Holiday or Tourist visa) | The full price, plus accessories |
| Servicing | Free wear-and-tear labour; parts only | You pay labour and parts |
| Breakdowns | Help button in the app; van call-out $89 | Up to you |
| Leaving Brisbane | Return the bike. Early exit: deposit kept + one week’s rent | Sell it, often at short notice and a lower price |
| Long-term cost | Keeps adding up every week | Usually cheaper after roughly 6–12 months |

Rent vs buy questions
Is it cheaper to rent or buy an e-bike in Brisbane?
It depends on how long you'll ride. For a few months, renting usually costs less once you count servicing, parts, accessories and what you lose when you sell. Beyond roughly 6 to 12 months (depending on the bike's price, its resale value and servicing), buying a reliable e-bike usually works out cheaper, if you can pay up front and keep it maintained. Use the calculator on this page with your own numbers.
What does renting include that buying doesn't?
With Brisbane Bike Rental you get a helmet, lock, lights and phone holder, free wear-and-tear labour at our workshop for the whole hire, and the free rider app. You pay parts for wear items such as tubes ($28) and brake pads ($35). When you own a bike you pay for all servicing, parts and accessories yourself.
Can I rent first and buy later?
Yes. With rent-then-buy, up to 4 weeks of hire comes off the price if you buy an e-bike from us within 4 weeks of starting the hire. NCM e-bikes start from $1,599 in our shop.
What isn't included in the calculator?
Theft, insurance, a replacement battery, and the income you lose while a bike is off the road waiting for repairs. Those mostly affect owners, so if they matter to you, buying looks a little more expensive than the calculator shows.
